Cress

This retelling of "Rapunzel" fits perfectly into the series of sci-fi /fairytale mixes. Instead of a tower, Crescent Moon (Cress) is trapped in a satellite by none other than evil queen Levana. When Cinder, Scarlet, and escaped convict Carswell Thorne come to rescue her, her world opens up.

Title: Cress | Series: Lunar Chronicles #3

Author: Marissa Meyer

Pages: 560 | Genre: YA Science FIction/ Fairytale

Recommended: if you like a good fairytale retelling, a good love story, a good adventure, or just a good book.

Song: Girls (Who Run the World) by Beyonce

Because these books are all about girl power.

Power to the Girls! ....and the Boys

I super love that each Lunar Chronicle empowers and expands the archetypical princess role. Cinder (Cinderella) is a master mechanic cyborg. Scarlet (Red Reding Hood) is a fiery pilot with a wolf wrapped around her finger. Cress (Rapunzel) is a hopeless romantic, as well as an amazing hacker.

Meyer takes this one step further by also empowering the male counterparts. All too often, men are emasculated by heroines. Fairytale princes are basically Ken dolls. Instead, each romantic pairing in this series provides complementary personalities and abilities. For Cress in particular, the chemistry between her and Thorne is entertaining and palpable.

Best Sidekick Ever!

Iko is by far the best character, and I'm glad Meyer keeps bringing her back in different forms. She is the voice of reason and the comic relief. For a robot, she has a very human personality. I can't wait to read more of her unguarded and spunky lines in "Winter".

Winter is Coming!

Speaking of "Winter", I'm waiting so impatiently for it on my Overdrive account. Not only is she Snow White, but she is creepy as hell. Her weirdness struck me at first as a new version of Harry Potter's Luna Lovegood. It turns out she is Luna with a twist...a major twisted twist.

Audiobook

Rebecca Soler does a better job narrating Cress. In Scarlet, she jumped around with accents, not clearly choosing one for French Scarlet. That being said, she is really good at accents, and does the various character voices well.
