Reading, Interrupted

It's a foregone inevitability that the act of reading invites unwanted interruptions.

Why can't reading be the equivalent of putting on headphones on an airplane? Really! It should be the universal symbol for "Don't bother me"!

And am I right when I say this? It's always in the following situations:

  • When you're most into the book

  • When you've almost finished the book

Perceptions of Reading

So few people participate in reading for pleasure. While they might not say it aloud, I think when people see someone reading, they assume that they are either bored or have nothing else better to do. I think they interrupting as a favor.

Reality of Reading

I have a friend named Chuck who shares my love of reading. We like to ruminate (often on rainy days) about times when responsibility was lighter, time was less precious, and whole afternoons could be spent in the company of a good book. We daydream of a time when we can once again curl up with our paper-backed friends.

Chuck and I are not alone. The reality of reading is that it's a cathartic exercise. It's a way of reaching destinations, feeling emotions, experiencing other lives, and knowing interesting people that we otherwise would being unable to access.

Now, you non-readers. Think about what it would be like to be interrupted amid this kind of experience.

That's right. It would suck. HARD.

So Keep This is Mind

To all the non-readers, respect the book.

To all the readers - have patience.
