The world is a scary place when everyone can spontaneously combust. When you can control the flames, it's a whole new place.
Title: The Fireman
Author: Joe Hill
Pages: 747
Genre: Fiction, Lite Horror
Recommended: if you like like Stephen King, or PG-13 Horror flicks.
Song: "Burn" by Ellie Goulding
Lite Horror
If you're anything like me, horror movies are not your jam. "The Fireman" is careful to be just disturbing enough to make you cringe, but not horrific enough to illicit nightmares. I would also call this "horror for beginners".
Mary Poppins and other Media
Hill makes a lot of references to Mary Poppins and different songs. It is through music that people become one with the flame. Sometimes media references seem superfluous, but they weave well in this book. You won't hear the words "spit spot" the same way again.
Cross Section of the Apocalypse
I did not anticipate that the plot would proceed the way it did. When you start a book with a flaming body dropping from the Space Needle, you expect a series of massive explosions on a world-wide level. However, most of the story occurs within a small radius about a little collection of people. The book is less about the end of the world and more about adopting a new state of mind. One the will help you survive.
A Note on the Author
He is Stephen King's son! Let me just say: the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Hill writes a good long story. He plays with his characters' sanity. He gives them fatal flaws. He puts them on the edge of danger, and sometimes he reels them back in.
Perhaps the most disturbing thing about this author is just how much he looks like his dad. See?

Audiobook
Kate Mulgrew (a.k.a. Captain Janeway) should really narrate more books. At just over 22 hours, this is a long read, even at 1.5 speed. She makes it seem much shorter.
