Book 4 slows down, but only adds to the series.

Author: Brent Weeks

Pages: 682

Genre: Fantasy

Recommended: If you like the series. I don't recommend this book if you haven't read the previous books in "The Lightbringer" series.

Song: "I Want You To Want Me" by Letters to Cleo

Part IV

This epic story was initially intended to be a trilogy, but was then extended into a five part series. While the first three books were fast-paced and action-packed, it feels like Brent Weeks hit the "Slow" button for this one. I think he is setting the characters up for a massive finale...and we've only got another 1.5 years for that to roll out. I'll look forward to it as much as I anticipated this one.

Progression of Kip

Kip is probably the worst name for a hero. I get that he's supposed to be from humble circumstances, with an unassuming personality, but "Kip" should be shorter for something stronger.

Kip's progression as the "Luke Skywalker' figure is one of the most believable I've ever read. The unlikely hero usually comes from nowhere and takes over the world in just one book. Kip has his moments, but he continues to grow and show his great ability to lead people who love him. Where everyone else in his family harbors evil and is knowingly deceiving, Kip is transparently and compassionate in his diplomacy.

Vaginismus

My husband finished this book before me and he was bored with the large percentage of the book that concentrates on Kip and Tysis trying to consummate their marriage. Weeks seems to be trying to bring awareness to the condition of vaginismus, which is pretty much a literal medical cock block. Yes, a great deal of the book does focus on this, but I didn't mind it. Just be prepared for it.

Audiobook

Simon Vance, per usual, does not disappoint. I highly recommend anything narrated by him.
