Join Lyra, a clever and adventurous little girl on an incredible journey. My experience is summed up in 4 words: I want a Daemon!
Title: The Golden Compass
His Dark Materials Book 1
Author: Philip Pullman
Pages: 399
Genre: Children's Fantasy
Recommended: to adventurous souls of all ages
Song: "Magic Carpet Ride". Because this book will show you "A Whole New World".
Dark Themes Told Charmingly
I suspect Philip Pullman wrote this story with a magic wand.
Set in Victorian England the world of "The Golden Compass" incorporates a few magical twists that sprinkle pixie dust over everything. Told mostly from an impetuous and clever (bordering on conniving) young girl Lyra, the story flows between adventures. As Lyra discovers more about the darkness of her world, you still can't help but feel the magic sparking in the air.
What I like about this book is that Lyra just goes with the flow. She gets some major stuff dumped on her, but she takes it in stride. No matter what you may have heard about this book (Catholic church mumbo jumbo, etc.), it teaches children of all ages that no matter where (or whom) you come from, or what misadventures life throws your way, you can use that darkness to your advantage and make more light.
Bad Movie. Good Book.
I remember being dragged to "The Golden Compass", the movie in college. It was confusing, pointless, and done in very bad CG. I mean, look at this monkey: it's friggin' ugly

See? Monkey or Cro-Magnon man? Either way, I don't like it.
Now that I've read this amazing book, I feel so bad that I let the horribleness of the movie delay the reading of the book.
Audiobook
Three magic words: FULL CAST RECORDING! The kids are voiced by kids, all the dialogue is between difference narrators, and (best of all) the main narrator is the author himself. What more could you ask for?
If you are new to audiobooks, I highly recommend this one for a first experience.
