Author: Jenny Lawson (A.K.A. "The Bloggess")

Pages: 329

Genre: Memoir, Comedy

Recommended: If you love funny stories with quirky commentary and don't mind the "F" word. Also, if you have any kind of depression or know anyone with any kind of depression.

Full honesty: I picked this book partially because of the hilariously demented raccoon depicted on the cover. I hadn't even finished it when I found myself texting my friends about it. It made me laugh. It made me want to write. It's slated for the next road trip listen. The best thing: she is a blogger, and I don't have to wait for her next book for my Jenny Lawson fix!

Furiously Funny

The book is laugh out loud funny. Jenny Lawson shares her experiences with mental illness openly and colorfully. That raccoon on the cover? She actually has two taxidermy raccoons that are in that same pose, and she has stories to share about them. After reading "Furiously Happy", I want to go on vacation with Jenny Lawson. Or maybe just watch TV.

The Horrible Things Aspect

Jenny Lawson covers some really tough topics in this book. She has general anxiety disorder and debilitating depression. She has contemplated suicide. I love that she is brave enough to open up about this. I can identify on a small level with her, and she has made me stronger. With each new story, something bad is given light. I like that Lawson doesn't necessarily "fix" things, but she does show that they aren't emotions or conditions to be ashamed of or hidden.

Beware the 'F" Word

I wouldn't call this a family read. Jenny Lawson does talk about sex and living with mental illness. She uses the "F" word and other cuss words freely. This isn't something I minded, so I still thin it's awesome.

Audiobook

Jenny Lawson herself reads her book. Her voice is an easy listen. A lot of comedy writers sound like they are reading a book: deliberately and watered down. Lawson is authentic.
