The Fifth Season

What better way to ring in the new year than with a story about the end of the world? This first part of "The Broken Earth" series enthralled both myself and Hubbs through a long roadtrip and beyond.

Elevator Pitch: In Essun's world, the Earth shakes all the time. Syenite also lives in this world and holds the power to control and manipulate the Earth. Young Damaya discovers the stigma surrounding these powers when they manifest in her. Everyone is prepared for the day when the quakes will grow beyond control, and dust will block the light, leaving everyone in a desolate fifth season.

Recommended to: Feminists. The main characters never stop doubting and breaking free. Also fantasy and new magic lovers.

Favorite Part: Whenever I thought I had one part figured out. Warning: you won't know the full story until the very end.

Note: Another Plus! The main character and her abilities remind me very much of the earth bending character Toph from Nickelodeon's "Avatar: The Last Airbender".
