Open this great golden cover and ascend to the Grisha Verse, a world where magic exists, a fact that is beneficial to everyone, except the people who wield it. Bardugo has created a complex place with intricate and compelling characters.
This fantasy novel is currently labeled as its own duology, but I anticipate it will eventually be listed as Grishaverse #6. I recognize some characters from "Shadow and Bone" and the "Six of Crows" books. While this is a great story, it does help to have the background provided in Bardugo's other books. Having not read all of them myself, I feel like I would have benefited if I had.
The King of Scars is about the new king of Ravka, Nikolai Lantsov. At first, the title seems like it is derived from the scars the king gives himself when he uncontrollably turns into a monster. More subtly, King Nikolai (total hunk - I have a total crush), rules over a kingdom healing from the wounds of drug addiction and and corruption.

Most compelling is the love story between charismatic Nikolai and the imtimidating former bad girl, Zoya Nazyalensky. I just want them to make deep, fiery, passionate love.
On to the villian. I've said it before; I'll say it again: The Darkling is no name for an evil sorcerer. The less-than-menacing name sounds like a cute baby bad guy. No matter what this guy does, his name makes him all-too-defeatable. Other that this mishap, Bardugo has a pension for great names!
Song: "Powerful" by Ellie Goulding and Tarrus Riley. Because the magic is powerful and magnetic.
