I took a personal interest in this book, simply because I have a roller coaster relationship with depression.
I received this book from a Goodreads Giveaway in January, 2017. In the year that it took me to read it, I sunk into a deep depression. I was still able to function (work, clean the house, be social), but I struggled daily with very dark thoughts. I've recovered, but I can see a direct correlation between the "Lost Connections" Hari covers and my own depression.
As the subtitle suggests, this nonfiction book "Uncovers the Real Causes of Depression - and the Unexpected Solutions". Hari isn't an expert on depression, but he references doctors and studies that point to evidence that lifestyle, inside and outside a person's control, can impact their likelihood to experience depression.

Hari takes the stance that depression needs to be approached differently by Western culture. That yes, drugs can help in some situations, but that people can be lifted by changing their relationship to the following:
Meaningful Work
Understanding of and overcoming childhood trauma
Connections with other people
Having a place in the community
Separation from the self
Connecting to meaningful values
Restoring outlooks on the future
Not only did I learn a lot from this book, I can personally attest to how his suggested connections really do make a difference.
